Legal operations and mass proceedings: Fieldfisher X launches in Berlin

European law firm and member of the Swedish Chamber of Commerce in Germany Fieldfisher has today launched a dedicated, specialised unit for legal tech and operations focusing on Germany’s booming mass litigation market.

Fieldfisher_X is based in Berlin and led by new Legal Technology and Operations partner Jan Wildhirth, with a team of legal tech, data science, operations and litigation experts.

The unit will allow Fieldfisher to provide scalable legal services for companies and public institutions threatened with or already facing large mass litigation claims in Germany like antitrust damage, data leaks, incorrect capital markets disclosures, consumer revocation and PHI premium adjustments.

Fieldfisher X will also support clients with other major legal challenges, such as data protection and regulatory changes, by providing tactical planning, legal analysis, digital data, process and interface management, efficient case handling and strategic communication by agile, interdisciplinary teams from a single, central source.

Companies and public institutions are increasingly confronted with challenges such as mass litigation, cyber risks and ever more complex regulation, which require a combination of intelligent legal advice and tailored technology-based solutions.

With the launch of Fieldfisher X, Fieldfisher is creating an entity that can provide solutions to these challenges, taking the legal tech and operations innovations of recent years to the next level.

Fieldfisher X will also offer business models beyond litigation, including managed legal services and software-enabled services to support clients on a range of mandates at scale.

Jan Wildhirth, an experienced lawyer and legal tech entrepreneur, joined Fieldfisher as a partner at the beginning of 2022. Having held previous positions as a lawyer at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, at Axel Springer SE, where he worked as COO of the digital consultancy ”Axel Springer hy”, and most recently as founder of the legal service provider eagle lsp, Wildhirth brings many years of experience in developing and successfully applying digital business models, as well as advising companies on defending themselves in mass litigation claims.

Fieldfisher X’s Berlin team includes lawyers, software developers, data scientists and project managers, who work closely with Fieldfisher’s international dispute resolution practice and other practice groups to provide customised, expert-led advice on individual client mandates.

Commenting on the launch of the new unit, Managing Director of Fieldfisher X Jan Wildhirth said:

Fieldfisher X is a radical step for Fieldfisher and for the mass litigation market in Germany. We are not just creating an in-house centre of excellence, but a new entity that will work directly with clients and actively engage with the market.

With our cross-disciplinary, multi-functional team, we will provide scalable, focused legal services. I look forward to transforming the traditional legal service model into an integrated legal solutions provider in an exciting and fast-growing international law firm.”

Philipp Plog, Managing Partner of Fieldfisher in Germany, who recently served as an expert witness in the German Bundestag’s legal committee on the Federal Legal Tech Act and advises a large number of legal tech providers, added:

I am delighted to be launching this forward-thinking new business unit with Jan and his wider team.

With Fieldfisher X, we will expand our core advisory business and support our clients in tapping new potential and tackling complex challenges. The focus will be on the scalability of projects, where we can provide comprehensive, efficient solutions from our new Berlin base.”

Fieldfisher will also strengthen its presence in the Berlin market with additional teams of lawyers; new appointments will be announced in due course.
